Q

You often criticize the “systematized photography market.” What do you see as the biggest problem?

A

People are already conditioned by systems built by merchants.
A few minutes of shooting, a fixed number of shots, raw files must be delivered.
They treat that like law or rule.
“Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?”
No. That’s not ‘how it’s supposed to be.’ It’s just someone else’s method.
Why should that be forced on me?

What’s even more ridiculous is that because everyone does the same thing, it becomes ‘normal.’
Everyone says, “This is the standard,” but no one actually thinks for themselves.
That’s what annoys me the most.
Photography has turned into a mass-produced product instead of creation.

I believe a photographer is a creator before being a merchant.
Each person should have their own gaze, sensitivity, and style.
But now, that’s mostly gone.
Everyone says their work is ‘unique,’ but it’s just copies of trends.
Same lighting, same tones, same poses, same expressions.
How is that individuality?

So do you shoot in a way that differs from those systems?

A

Of course.
I don’t impose time limits or shot limits.
I keep shooting until the day’s emotion, the person’s rhythm, and my energy align.
That’s why my sessions are not a service, but an experience.
It’s not consumption by choosing options, but a process of creating something together.

Of course, compromise with a client is necessary.
Exposure levels and concepts must be discussed.
But that compromise should never侵해 my individuality or the integrity of my work.
The moment I abandon myself, it is no longer my photograph.

What are your thoughts on the current pricing structure of the Korean photography market?

A

First of all, I believe Korea is the country where commercial photography is the most highly developed in the world.
But that doesn’t mean it has individuality or diversity.
On top of that, the current pricing system is ridiculous.
There is no artistic value, no philosophy, yet everyone charges similar prices using similar systems.
That’s nothing more than trend-based pricing.

There are no real material costs, and no depth of creation, yet many don’t even know why they charge what they charge.
The bigger problem is that no one questions it.
They simply say, “That’s just how it is,” and move on.

You can’t put a price on artistic value.
It’s the result of a photographer’s perspective, sensibility, and philosophy.
I also make a conscious effort to price my work not based on market rates, but on the weight of my own sensibility.
To do that, I try not to lose my uniqueness, while constantly pushing myself to evolve creatively.

Some people are dissatisfied that you don’t provide raw files. How do you respond?

Yes, there are. I understand where that feeling comes from.
But that is like saying,
“The pasta is so good, give me all the ingredients.”
That is not polite.

For someone like me, raw files are materials before they become a work.
I refine them, combine them, and balance emotion and lighting
to create a single finished result.
That is my final photograph.

Asking for raw files is like asking to see the dough of a dish.
It is not respect for creation, just simple curiosity.
Take the finished result.
That is the world I have created.

If not,
then find a remote control that can take photos on your behalf.
